Ozone treatments can be broken down into the following :
- Prolozone Injections
- Major Authohemotherapy (MAHT)
- Limb Bagging
- Ozonated Saline
- Insufflation – Ear , Rectal, Vaginal
- Minor Autohemotherapy (MiAHT)
- Ozone Sauna
1. Prolozone Injections
Prolozone is a technique that marries concepts from neural therapy, Prolotherapy, and ozone therapy.
It involves injecting various combinations of procaine, anti-inflammatory medications/ homeopathics,
What a Prolozone Patient Can Expect
The first thing that most patients notice after a Prolozone treatment is an almost immediate 50-80% decrease in pain. This is in part due to the effect of the procaine. But ozone itself has a significant ability to directly relieve pain.
A 2009 article published in the European Journal of Pharmacology demonstrated that a single subcutaneous injection of ozone prevents allodynia and decreases the over-expression of pro-inflammatory caspases in the orbito-frontal cortex of neuropathic mice, immediately eliminating any signs of pain.
Lamberto Re, a medical doctor and soccer team physician in Verona, Italy routinely injects the acutely injured areas of his players with ozone alone. He does not use procaine. And he reports a marked decrease in pain as well as an improved rate of healing.
Next, chronic areas of degeneration such as in osteoarthritic knees, hips, and ankles will regenerate.
Although more research is needed to fully document this effect, some physicians have already taken pre and post treatment x-rays that have shown an increase in cartilage thickness in knees treated with Prolozone.
And fortunately, other than a rarely occurring and temporary increase in pain in the area injected, no significant side effects from Prolozone have ever been demonstrated. Other than the possibility of an allergy to one of the liquid components, there are no contraindications to its use.”
Conditions That Respond
The primary criterion for selecting a patient for Prolozone is pain. If it hurts, Prolozone should be tried. I have had cases in which the chief complaint was instability, and the patient had no complaints of pain. A classic example would be a recurring dislocating shoulder. Whereas Prolozone has worked well in many of these cases, my experience is that it should be combined with classical Prolotherapy for best results.
The following is a list of conditions that have been found to be very responsive to Prolozone: chronic neck and back pain from any cause, rotator cuff injuries, degenerative and arthritic hips, knees, and ankles, degenerated discs, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, TMJ, sciatica, heel spurs, neuromas, tennis elbow, sinus infections, pelvic disorders, dental infections, post-op pain, non-union fractures, painful scars, and sports injuries—basically anything that hurts.

*above info from Dr. F. Shallenberger – article published in the Journal of Prolotherapy 2011.
A small amount of an ozone and oxygen mixture (up to 10 ml) are injected into the patient like a normal injection would be. This method is commonly used to treat allergies and inflammatory diseases, and is sometimes utilized as an adjunct to traditional cancer therapies in Europe.
Infiltration with Ozone (1 to 20 ml volume depending on the size of the joint) Infection blocking and immune activating, especially on shoulder and knee joint diseases.
2. Major Autohemotherapy (MAHT)
MAHT is the most important form of low-risk systemic ozone application.
The ozone and blood reaction takes place outside of the patient’s body, after which his or her own blood is re-infused with it’s activated red blood cells and activated immunocompetent cells.
50-150 ml of the patient’s blood is withdrawn, and enriched with an exactly dosed quantity of ozone outside of the body. The ozone is then passed through the blood in the form of extremely fine bubbles and the freshly ozonated blood is then administered back to the patient via normal infusion.
The most important indications for MAHT (Major Autohemotherapy) treatments are: arterial circulatory disorders, systemic infections, and diseases occurring in the context of immune deficiencies, e.g. rheumatism/arthritis, lupus, systemic candida, etc.
The the duration of the Major Autohemotherapy (MAHT) treatment procedure is generally around 45 minutes.
3. Limb Bagging
The affected area is isolated with a plastic bag for external Ozone application. A mixture of Oxygen and Ozone is infused and extracted after a period of time.
Ozone disinfects, activates blood circulation and speeds up the wound healing.
A treatment takes about 20 minutes.
4. Ozonated Saline
Ozonated Saline is one of the simpler methods of administration of Medical Ozone for the patient, but is conversely the most technical for the therapist to prepare as it is the volume of ozone remaining saturated in the saline that is the total treatment dosage, as opposed to other methods of administration where the dosage is calculated in the volume and concentration of ozone being produced by the generator.
The saline should also, ideally, be ozonated during the entire time whilst being administered.
For the patient, the Ozonated Saline is is extremely easily administered via intra venous drip, over a period of 15 to 30 minutes, or perhaps even longer, dependent on the volume being given.
This methodology is used extensively in Eastern Europe, and is in fact their preferred method of administration as it is able to deliver larger dosages of ozone per treatment and it also treats a larger volume of blood in the body, compared to MAHT for example, where traditionally, 100ml of blood is used per treatment.
The use of Ozonated Saline is indicated in a number of desired outcomes based on the volume and concentration of the Physiologic solution produced.
5. Insufflation – Rectal, Vaginal, Ear
Rectal insufflation with Ozone has an infection blocking and immune activating effect. It is used on infectious intestine diseases or injuries of the tissue.
Gas volumes of 50 to 300 ml of Ozone are applied with a Bladder syringe and catheter. A treatment series of 10 sessions is often enough.
The rectal administration of ozone gas is one of the oldest forms of systemic and local application, dating back to 1936, and in terms of systemic activity, is a genuine alternative to MAHT.
It is also convenient and practical for children and elderly patients where MAHT is not practical due to unfavourable vein access.
The procedure generally takes 10 minutes.
A suitable catheter, inert to ozone, is placed into the vagina. Medical ozone is loaded into a syringe adequate to guarantee the accuracy of measuring volume and insufflated slowly.
Alternatively, insufflation can be carried out at a continuous low flow rate for periods of up to 20 min.
Ozone is introduced into the ear canal via an adapted stethoscope type device. Extremely low flow rates are used and no pressure on the ear drum is allowed.
Infections and conditions in the head & dental area can be targeted with ear insufflation.
6. Minor Autohemotheraphy (MiAHT)
In this quick procedure, 5 ml – 10 ml of blood is taken from a patients vein and then enriched in a 20 ml syringe containing 10 ml of ozone. The ozone enriched blood is then injected into the patients gluteal muscle or under the patients skin.
The immune system reacts to this ozone enriched blood with higher activity and production of antibodies.
MiAHT has proven itself to be of great value as a non-specific immunoactivator with benefit in any condition where increased immune activity is desired.
The treatment process only takes about 10 minutes and can be carried out three or more times per week.
7. Ozone Sauna
Oxygen Chamber Therapy is when ozone or “activated oxygen” and steam is introduced into a special steam sauna cabinet, where it is then absorbed transdermally (across the skin) of the occupant. The result is a health effect on the occupant that combines the beneficial oxygenation and detoxification effects of both Ozone Therapy and Steam Sauna Therapy. A session lasts 20 to 30 minutes wherein temperatures are raised and steam is introduced into the cabinet. Beneficial effects are experienced after a few sessions and can be used to treat almost any medical condition.
The Benefits of Steam Ozone Sauna
The use of a sauna should be an important part of any detoxification program. The sauna increases the eliminative, detoxifying and cleansing capacity of the skin by stimulation of the sweat glands and also promotes healthy skin tone and texture due to increased blood circulation. Using the steam sauna with ozone allows the steam to surround the body and ozone can be introduced through the skin. Humid heat opens the pores, which allows the ozone through the skin to the bloodstream, where it can travel to the fat and lymph tissue. It is very important to cleanse the lymph tissue of toxins and the ozone/steam sauna is the easiest and best way to accomplish this.
Artificially induced hyperthermia (rising body temperature results in the destruction of bacteria and viruses) combined with heavy sweating and a cleansing effect initiated by ozone will result in elimination of toxins accumulated mainly in the lymphatic system relieving the liver from the difficult task of dealing with them. Through the centuries, men and women have used steam to purify the skin, soothe sore muscles, boost circulation and to simply relax. The combined action of moist heat and ozone cleanse the lymphatic system, which carries 90% of the body’s fluids. Ozone brings oxygen to the tissues for enhanced health and vitality. The combination of steam and ozone is a natural, effective way to promote a refreshing sense of well-being. We believe that an Ozone/Steam Sauna cabinet represents a pleasant and easy to follow form of body cleansing.
Benefits of ozone sauna:
- Relaxes and loosens muscles by reducing the buildup of lactic acid and increasing muscle flexibility.
- Oxidizes toxins so they can be eliminated through the skin, lungs, kidneys and colon.
- Boosts blood circulation, helping injured muscles to repair quicker.
- Stimulates vasodilatation of peripheral blood vessels relieving pain and speeding the healing process.
- Eliminates bacterial and viral infections of all kinds.
- Speeds up the metabolic processes of the inner organs and endocrine glands resulting in a loss of 200-450 calories in a 20 minute session.
- Improves blood circulation, oxygen and nutrient delivery
- Helps injured muscles repair quicker
- Stimulates immune system
- Increases white blood cell count
A few quotes from practitioners using Ozone & Steam Sauna Therapy:
“My results were spectacular from day one. My first patient was a lady with shingles whose sores were dramatically improved after one session (and subsequently disappeared altogether after some more sessions).”
“Arthritis is another ailment that I have seen the ozone steam sauna help enormously. I have seen people who struggle to walk up my stairs bounding up, pain free, within a few sessions.”
Newest research shows steam hyperthermia an effective treatment for:
- Detoxification programs
- Immune system deficiencies
- Pain management
- Stress and muscle tension
- Increasing body metabolism
- Elimination of toxins
- Blood circulation
According to Dr. Frank Shallenberger, a world renowned authority in this field has also had much success treating patients with other chronic infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis. With regard to ozone steam sauna therapy there have been reports of people being cured of cancer using this method.
Ozone steam saunas have also been beneficial for patients with skin disorders such as shingles. One patient reported a dramatic improvement after just one session and complete resolution after several more sessions. Patients with eczema and psoriasis see rapid improvements too and symptoms are typically much improved within about three sessions.
Ozone steam saunas have also been effective for patients with a diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome and myalgic encephalomyelitis. Many patients have reported an improvement in their energy and overal sense of well-being within 4 to 8 weeks of starting weekly treatment sessions. Some reported cures whereas others did experience significant improvement.
As patients sit in the sauna they sweat profusely and are able to eliminate toxins. So any health concerns caused by toxicity is likely to respond. This includes silicon poisoning from breast implants and poisoning from other chemical exposures. The temperature of the sauna can be regulated precisely so it is comfortable for the patient. Usually we start with a lower temperature and then increase the temperature in subsequent sessions as tolerated and the duration up to 30 minutes.
Other health conditions that have improved in patients using ozone sauna also include arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and depression. With regard to depression it is believed that detoxification causes the brain to function better and that improved oxygenation causes the mood and overall mental functioning to improve. The advantage of the hyperthermia that is achieved by using an ozone sauna is that toxins are broken down and released, that the immune system works better, and that the growth of microorganisms is slowed down. In addition, the thermal effect causes blood vessels and capillaries within the deep layers of the tissues to dilate, which promotes better circulation.
